Fantastic!
I've been hoping that the MeWah Launceston folks would finally open in Hobart. Now that they have I'm not disappointed. Great food, good service, a bit pricey, but now all of a sudden we seem to have two good Chinese restaurants in Hobart.
In my opinion - Me Wah is as good as the top shelf places on Little Bourke street in Melbourne. |

...though not so enamored by one that has varying prices depending on the location of the outlet...
$14.50 became $18.00, and $9.50 became $12.00...
Still, that was some funkin' tasty salted squid... |

It took between five and eleven seconds for the waiter to refill water glasses. The wine list is mind blowing and desert menu contains (detail memory fails me) deep fried icecream and a selection of to die for drinks to be drunk after SUCH a meal. Check out the ports and armagnacs.
Hot and sour soup, despite the inevitable (traditional?) corn flour style glug had perfectly seperated chilified oil, shredded chicken and black fungus amongst other ingredients - not rip your mouth out like street/cheaper versions I've had in the past though subtle and layered with a good bout of chile. Thank god for the Schezuans.
The lazy susan swirled faster and faster as our meal progressed - delighted and polite circumnavigations to begin with though as the roast and stir fried duck, pork belly with crackling, garlic and chile squid, unctuous mushrooms and Mount Buddha chicken tastes (etc etc) reached our bellies the pace picked up.
I may not get out much, though this dining experience was mainland good. - delicious, elegant, attentive (not pushy) and though I was sated it was only $70 each for three courses and wine.
Disclaimer - it is rare that I will use the mainland comparison as it is rarely valid - though what else can Me Wah be compared to in this state? |

I went to the Hobart one this week. I had earlier enjoyed the Launceston one, and, as my mum tells me, I used to enjoy the Launceston one more than twenty five years ago.
This time I had the $65 set menu. Which was seven dishes plus green tea. I really enjoyed all of them except for the garlic prawns. Which were ok, just not exceptional like the rest.
The only problem was that the white wine was warm. They apologized, and tried their best to cool it down. They said their wine fridge had broken down. Something to think about before spending $3000 on a bottle of wine. It may have been kept above storage temperature.
To spite generally very good service, we had to ask twice for our green tea.
It was still the best Chinese dining experience I have had in Hobart. I will be going back there as often as I can. |

| Got the assorted fried seafood in spicy salt taked away tonight. It's basically the best seafood basket I've ever eaten. And for $22, it's a nice price, especially compared to the $20 fisherman's abomination they serve at the Willows Tavern. Coral Trout, Scallops, Prawns, Squid. Bonzalicious. |

well that's certainly a ringing endorsement. I'll have to check it out.
I am quite partial to the seafood basket. Particularly if it has additional interesting flavours, and fresh seafood.
I have had them many times at Mures, and while I like the fact that the fish is always very very fresh (much to their credit) I have started to get a bit over them. _________________ hobbits love the spice. |

| The first piece of seafruit I attacked was a prawn, and much to my surprise, it tasted prawny. |

After all the hype I couldn't leave the place alone any longer !
I took BC recommendation onboard and had the crispy seafood platter (or whatever they call it)
It was very nice, unfortunately it wasn't crispy by the time I got it home, this was a bastard but not their fault, next time I will dine in.
It was pretty salty but this isn't a real problem for me and I had plenty of Little Creatures Pale Ale to take the edge off. _________________ We get suicidal teens and scramble to teach them self-esteem. | The food was tasty but I found the atmosphere to be a tad austere - serious looking waiters standing around in suits. I think I would go there with spending lotsa money my intention. |
