Anyone else go to the growers market on the corner of Elizabeth and Melville Streets this morning? It will be on every Sunday now, from 8am to 1pm. We turned up at 8.30am this morning, and already some things had sold out (bread), and others were about to run out! There were heaps of people there, but not that many stalls - hopefully more will join as time goes on.

I bought some Woodbridge smoked salmon (not bad), some free range ham that we fried up for breakfast (very good), some excellent and very peppery wild rocket, a jar of honey and some olive oil soap. The stall that sold the rocket also had all sorts of green salad leaves I have never seen before. The stall that had the ham said they "specialise in fat" - I thought they were joking, but they weren't - their bacon looked to be mostly fat - I am intrigued and want to try it some time, but just looking at it makes me feel like I've already put on a kilo! There was some delicious looking marinated lamb scotch fillet, but by the time we did our second round of looking it had sold out. Oh well, next week!

I am very excited about it - hopefully it gets bigger and stays for good.

We arrived at 11 and everything had sold out Sad

Bought a coffee tho, took forever for them to make it, cost $4 and tasted awful.

Keen to get up early next week and have a better look.

Got up early last Sunday so not to miss out on the romano, celery and garlic sourdough from Companion Bakery mentioned in the "best bread" thread. Got some - though didn't really like it that much but maybe it was because I wasn't in a sourdough mood. Reckon it will toast up beautifully though.

Also got some wonderfully sweet tomatoes that will be available for the next month from the stand that mainly sells leaf lettuce/herb varieties.

Good to see that the markets have grown a bit - more vegie and fruit stands, also Zum had a stall there too selling bread.

i really enjoy this market - it's almost become a regular thing. There's a great variety of things to try, some excellent salad bits and the glory of Cressy Lamb - get onto to that one, get one of the lamb eye fillets - incredible.

I don't think I've missd a week in ages.

really getting into these people:

Beef-A-Saurus

lovely, wide variety of cuts.

Getting a little more specific - there's a Cafe there - you can get a variety of freshly made rolls and a coffe. The Coffee is nothing special but not awful. The rolls - lovely. I tend to choose the cold smoked bacon and free range egg one.

ANother fun point is how many free samples one can try of things there - so much interesting porduce. The more expensive things(such as Bruny Island Cheese or Grandview sheep cheese) are the cheapest I ever seen them at this market.
